Hello my name is Diego Hernández De la Rocha (although Diego De la Rocha is less of a mouthful - barely), very nice to meet you, thanks for visiting my behance account, I'd like to tell you a little bit about myself, but where to start? Well..I've traveled around the world, bungee jumped, ridden camels, lived in a 2x2 room in Tokyo, eaten the craziest dishes you can think of and met people whose lives should be turned into movies.
Apart from that I'm also an ice-hockey goalie, I speak 4 different languages (and know a couple of words in another 10). I love doing all of those things and plan to add many more to the list but if you were to ask me what I love the most, I'd say it is to sit down…yup that's right, sit down for hours and hours, doing nothing but animating, pencil and paper, computer or hell..whatever you throw at me. I can't help it, it's just irresistible, I mean a beautifully crafted story and a captivating character, what more can you possibly need?
The way I approach it is to do one thing at a time, but make that one thing work, find a solution for each challenge and make it work. All my shots go through an extensive brainstorming and planning process, where I try to get involved as many people as I can, because that not only enriches the experience, but allows me to tackle challenges from different angles. When looking for solutions I draw them from my life, experiences and the people around me, I'm more of a team player kinda guy, which explains why I like hockey so much.
Through trial and error I've come to appreciate the value of all types of reference for helping the process, but I also think that thumbnailing, acting and imagination are the most crucial steps to get a better understanding of the shot. I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and characters, which at some point during the process always seem to end up with a little trace of my craziness.
I currently live in beautiful Vancouver B.C, where I attended Vancouver Film School's 3D Animation & Visual Effects program, but would happily go to any corner of this world to animate cool stuff, so if you think I would be a good match for your project or company, just give me a shout.
