Mixed Messages

Piece designed for the Artism - Art for Autism book. My aim for this project was to create a visually arresting image that would entice the viewer to look deeper into both the image presented and the subject matter.

Autism is a condition that is commonly misunderstood and often ignored or unnoticed by the public. I tried to reflect this through use of a hidden, contradictory message within the design. The mixed message adds an air of intrigue compelling the viewer to investigate further. The use of a single colour works as a graphic device that guides the viewers’ eye over the message that is hidden within the jumble of letters.

This jumble of letters represents how younger Autism sufferers communicate through consonant, word and sound combinations, but also how confusing and meaningless words can be to Autistic people.

The message also reinforces how Autistic people are often misunderstood and the isolation they feel, while at the same time referencing their use of pronoun reversal in their speech.

Salt Water

T-Shirt design for Allmightys.com under the title Underwater, from which part of the proceeds goes towards the Save the Whales charity. The idea for my design came about while thinking about sea water and tears - both of which contain salt - and how tears would go unnoticed underwater. This led me to think about how underwater species can become endangered without us noticing.
