NBIC identity

NBIC initiates and co-ordinates research and education to stimulate the development of the field of bioinformatics.

Research found that the organisation was lacking in visibility within their own specialist field. Therefore the new house-style was set around a strong and simple â€" yet recognisable â€" logo.

The visuals that are incorporated in the house-style were developed with custom build software. Using 17th century biology pen drawings and a typographic grid of the letters ACTG (the letters that form DNA), the image changes from ‘biology’ into ‘informatics’.

Besides building software we also developed a custom drawn typeface for the project.

Hubrecht Institute identity

The visual identity uses the most elementary form of developmental biology - the stem cell - as its initial concept. Various speckles represent the stem cells that are used as building blocks for the complete house-style. The logo is built up of a moiré grid of speckles to represent the abstract shape of an embryo.
Other items of the house-style show the further development of life; from embryo to living organism, illustrated in the characteristic grid. Constantly, three embryonic stages are printed to create depth within the image. The stationary shows the development of a zebrafish, dog, chicken or rabbit.
The visual language - that of ‘formless’ stem cell to full-fledged embryo - illustrates and further clarifies the process of developing life: the essence of this research institute.Â

Spinhex & Industrie calendar

The calendar integrates the four most commonly used calendar systems, namely, Gregorian, Jewish, Arabic and Chinese, showing the differences and similarities between them. It allows the user to choose one’s preferred system, which considers the different cultural holidays and important (religious) dates. The calendar ‘questions’ time as a strange and relative concept due to its various ways of measuring. A form of absurdity is presented concerning our perception of time. Months, weeks, days and even hours are measured differently in each system.

Calendar is completely perforated in order to show the grid. At the same time it gives the user the ability to tear apart the calendar to reveal hidden layers and use it as an advent calendar.

ICDS 2009 campaign

The complete identity and campaign visuals were designed on the basis of our interpretation of coeliac disease:

Coeliac disease is a disorder caused by so-called “gluten”. These are proteins, found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye and make bread sticky and tasty. Coeliac disease patients cannot tolerate these gluten in their diet. If they eat food that contains gluten this has severe consequences for their small intestine. As the intestine absorb nearly all food, it is important that its surface that is in direct contact with food, is as big as possible. To arrange this the intestine has a surface that looks like many fingers (so called ‘villi’) that point upwards. When coeliac disease patients eat gluten, these villi disappear.

Our visualisation refers to these villi. At the same time the visualisation reflects a fields of grain, that is influenced by wind.

Genetic Research publication

This PhD thesis describes new mathemical approaches that are scientifically interesting, but to a general audience too technical. To address this we have tried to present a well-comprehendible graphical analysis of the the four years of full-time labout that have gone into this thesis:
- All e-mail sent in the period of four years has been analysed and graphically organised
- A graphical overview of the development of different versions of the thesis is given
- Shown are the origins of other scientists that have visited a website that was also part of this PhD thesis
- Relationships between different parts of this PhD thesis are given

The whole DNA of the auther is printed on the side of the book, including a comprehensive discussion on the value of this information and its potential ethical consequences

P(re)Search Engine

For his final Master project at the art academy of Utrecht, Thomas Clever wrote and designed the conceptual framework for a new (proto)type of search engine.

Dissatisfied with current ‘search results’, he analysed current search engines, Web 2.0 applications and future (Web 3.0) possibilities, and based the design around the potential of social knowledge networks.

PreSearch Engine’s concept draws inspiration from network and media theory and the likes Buchanan, Barabasi, Foucault, Surowiecki and Tufte
