My Life

I am a young designer whose sole goal in life right now is simply to become better at what I do. I was born and raised in mid-town Iowa, and so am tasked (like all other urban Iowans) with informing non-Iowans that it's not all cornfields and pig farms. I got a taste of big-city life while studying abroad in Rome and while working in Des Moines, and have thus decided that my ideal location is a place that's "happenin'." Presently, I am working full-time as a web and graphics designer for a local firm in my hometown.

What I bring to the Table

Besides overused colloquialisms, that is (see header); I've been a habitual illustrator since I got hold of Spider-Man comics at a young age. I also have a slightly unhealthy interest in technology, which combined with the aforementioned has brought me to a career in web design. My hand maintains the ability to create the cryptic hieroglyphics once known as "cursive," and I have been told by friends that I have a "dark" sense of humor. Most times when I sit down to write something (be it an e-mail or a chapter of some neglected story), I begin by trying to express my message in a way I haven't heard it myself before.

What I think is Important

Stories. Every group of words, images, or moving pictures has some sort of story to tell. Our job as designers is to make sure that story sends the intended message. Whether it's telling you why to spend $100 on a pair of shoes, or showing you the way into the ballpark without falling into the rancor pit, the story needs design to manifest itself. I like to think that in this way, we as designers can emphasize our worth in the market, and not just be people who make things pretty.
