My name is Chee Woong. I come from Penang Island, Malaysia. It is a beautiful island on the west side of Malaysia in Southeast Asia. I am a Malaysian Chinese, meaning I am Chinese born in Malaysia.
Malaysia has a very diverse collection of cultures and I was required to learn several languages in order to move freely among these ethnic groups. These various differences and ethnicity have gone a long way towards giving me an insight into a wide variety of creative ideas.
I have a great passion for drawing and painting and have always wanted to be a fine artist, ever since I was quite young. Unfortunately, the appreciation for art is limited in my society, so I shifted my direction from art to design. I think the best thing in design is its relationship to people, society and culture. It always excites me to communicate with the audience through a piece of design work; whether it is a piece of typography work or just an illustration. I believe in simplicity, but I also enjoy the challenge of putting various elements to create something looks complex, interesting and yet, 'understandable'! Many people tend to say that my design is too ‘arty’ to be commercial design, but my opinion is that if something turns out to be attractive and nice, who cares whether it is a design or art? Why does there need to be a line between them?
I used to work in educational sector for years, since I always enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. Unfortunately, due to my limited formal education, I reached the limit of my advancement possibilities a few years ago. Now I am pursuing a course of study in Cumbria, UK, which I consider fulfilling a dream after so many years. This is a further extension of experiencing different societies and cultures which is very exciting and is helping me widen my views and improve my way of thinking.
I am currently in my final year of study at the University of Cumbria, UK, and I am looking forward to graduating and returning to the ‘real world’ where I will be able to get a job in the commercial world for a while before returning to the field I love the most, education. Read Less
