Creation of a Brazilian Radio Hour on WRCT 88.3 FM or Cantinho Brasileiro no Rádio. In 1999 the Brazilian Hour was a monthly hourly program and part of the Latin American Radio Magazine. In 2004 it grew to a weekly independent show. The program is broadcast in English and Portuguese every Friday at 6:00 pm and serves Pittsburgh by bringing Brazilian music as well as unique themes, news, event information, promotions and special interviews. Some important names that have appeared on the show include former Brazilian President, Jose Sarney and artists such as Jorge Ben Jor, Daniela Mercury, Daniel Jobim, Ivan Lins, Beth Carvalho, Almir Guineto, Margareth Menezes, Araketu, Terra Samba, Mosquitos, Angelique Kidjo, Plena Libre and many more.
Founder of a multicultural movement that fosters mutual benefits for immigrants and the local community. Global Beats, as it is called, helps bridge the cultural gap through multi-faceted arts events that embrace contemporary world music. Through these cross-cultural events, Global Beats helps break down misperceptions and prejudices by promoting understanding, respect and good times among all people that call Pittsburgh, “home.”
Director at Large, Latin American Cultural Union (LACU). She contributes in decision making, strategic and event planning, and grant writing. Carla is responsible for designing LACU’s first capabilities brochure and for the first grant award from the Multicultural Arts Initiative.
Founder and current administrator of the Brazilian Pittsburgh website, www.arrepiabrasil.org, which has over 680 members. The mission of this website is to become part of Pittsburgh’s multicultural spectrum of colors and create an intercultural channel of communications and resources to maintain a vibrant Brazilian presence in the Pittsburgh community.
