Anthony Kurtz is an award-winning, Euro-American, commercial, editorial and art photographer based in Berlin, Germany (formerly San Francisco). He specializes in environmental portraiture and strives to create beautiful and unexpected photographs of people and the spaces they occupy.
Combining both natural light and studio strobes, I sculpt light to create a mood, an atmosphere, a photograph that tells a story and, hopefully, sparks curiosity in the viewer. Read Less

My work often focuses on marginalization and alienation. I document people and places that exist on the edges of society, sometimes physically, mentally or both: excluded by choice or by circumstances. Concurrently, I am interested in control and conformity and I strive to represent both of these opposing forces within a photograph. I feel a need to document my generation and question our deeply rooted ideas of democracy, security and progress.

The element of time also plays an important role in my work. I often refer to future societal collapses and a world where humans are no longer in control.
The images I capture with a camera are merely foundations upon which I build by manipulating light, shadow and color.
I attempt to create a mood and atmosphere, a sort of hyper-reality that contains both a sense of mystery and sadness, hope and beauty. Read Less

"At the age of nine, I drew caricatures of my dad's colleagues during business dinners. They got passed around and generated some great laughs, except for one woman. I later found out that the woman I drew -with emphasized wrinkles and exaggerated features- got a facelift soon thereafter. From that day on, I knew I would always be doing art, that it could change the world, or at least inspire facial reconstruction."

Published in Photo Disctrict News, Wall Street Journal, Design Taxi, Common Ground Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Annual PX3 Book, Annual IPA Book, Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler.
Anthony has displayed his work in numerous galleries in the U.S and Europe, including Galerie Acte 2 in Paris, 111 Minna and Artworksf in San Francisco.

Anthony has won many international photo awards, including multiple First and Second Prizes at the International Photo Awards (IPA), Photo District News (PDN) and the Prix de la Photographie de Paris (PX3).
