I am interested in the subconscious behaviour of anonymous individuals in the public environment. My observations of the diverse cultural life around me, clearly defines my surrounding community as well as my art practice. I note not only individuals striking a public pose, a specific hunched shoulder position, caused by the immediate response to mobile electronic devices that disconnect them from their social surroundings; but also those who navigate through their communities at a different pace.
I draw and paint and use the camera as a research notebook, a starting point for specific aesthetics of ambiguity and elusiveness. Here on the street there is a new concept of public space where the humorous dance of self-absorbed behaviour in the realm of social networking continues at a frantic pace
The process of creating a series of drawings often begins as I observe with wry eye, the multitasking efforts of an individual’s uncertain navigation in a crowd or of another impatiently demanding attention while texting. The drawings in the First Impressions series reflect the idea that an individual’s alienation from others and the surrounding landscape are missed opportunities for old-fashioned conversation and the serendipitous meeting of like-minded souls.
