Much of my artwork stems from thoughts about the past. It can be a record, or it can be a way of exorcising stale memories. Usually, the subject isn’t obvious, because I prefer to present something pleasant, something “pretty”, to my audience. I am not always ready to let everyone know what’s on my mind.
I am actually much more comfortable calling myself an art student than an artist, because I feel as if I am still learning how to make the connection between brain (or heart) and materialized art. There is nothing that I enjoy more than working through my ideas with my hands, whether it’s manipulating paint on a canvas or the relationship between found images and objects. However, I am still exploring different mediums and looking for a process that is my own.
Recently, my oil paintings have been small landscapes of sunsets, stylized from snapshots I’ve taken. I find it hard to capture, with a camera, the awe I feel in the face of natural beauty, so I enjoy the freedom of creating color and light from blank canvas. I experiment with figures and more abstract images as well, especially the relationship between shadows and forms. Collages I enjoy making out of scraps I’ve collected over the natural course of living. I take old drawings I’ve made, cards I’ve received, candy wrappers I’ve collected, and put them together in a new context that is meaningful to me, inherent in their history. Read Less
