I started painting before I could speak, and I painted on almost every surface including my own limbs, I got my first computer before I was 7 years old (can't remember the exact age), it was an MSX AX170 (with arabic support) running MSX-BASIC, it used cassette tape for storage media and it had an 8-colors painting program, which I remember using to its full potential and saving my drawings on tape to share with my friends at school who had the same computer.
The school I went to was one of the few ones in Egypt that were participating in the GLOBE program by Al Gore, I believe that for that purpose we received extra equipment from the ministry of education, including an Apple Macintosh Performa. I remember being fascinated by it.
When I got my first Windows-PC in 1995 it ran 'Win95 Plus!' and was pre-loaded with graphic design software, I began designing things in my spare time, things for my classroom at school, posters for my group at the GLOBE program, animated GIFs and simple 3D animations using 3D Studio Max. later I was invited by my uncle in my summer vacation to his eCommerce startup to help design animated GIF advertisements and a few web design elements. My uncle had a significant role in feeding my passion for art and design, he often gifted me painting tools and design resources. I also had a passion for photography, I used an old YASHICA 35mm film camera that used to be my father's, but it was powered by an irreplaceable mercury battery that was discontinued and forbidden.
Three years later I started freelancing as a web designer while I attended a Computer Science and a Digital Media Engineering program at the German University in Cairo, I liked computer science and I did very well in subjects like Introduction to Operating Systems but I had a hard time studying advanced mathematics and things like Signal Processing or Electromagnetics, although I could understand them very well they did not interest me at all, so I never spent time studying them and I had a hard time passing those courses. By that time I also had my first digital camera, an Olympus point and shoot.
I spent more time painting and designing things for a students club called Pioneers, I designed their logo, banners for their website, posters and advertisements. I also spent a lot of time taking photos and editing them.
When we had a game development course, in addition to designing the graphics for my own group's game, a Java implementation of the board game Reversi, I helped another group of students who were developing a bigger spacecraft-shoot'em-up game creating the graphics for the buildings and sprites and pretty much all the graphics in the game.
By the forth year I realized I wasn't doing very well in college, I was wasting my family's money who was also having financial issues then. I decided to take a break of university and find a job. In the end of 2006 I started working for a web development studio and it was great, I met great people there and I learned that work can be fun.
In 2007, I had enough money to get my first Mac, owning a mac changed my taste in design, everything looked simple and enjoyable on the Mac. In the same year, two of my friends from the Pioneers students club offered me to join their newly established web design and development team, we called it robusta.
At robusta we got to design and develop an academic web portal for our University's Faculty of Media Design and Technology, it was a huge success and it got me a job offer from the university as well as a full scholarship. I decided I want to study what I loved doing, design, and in 2008 I started all over at the Graphic and Media design program.
I quit working for the web development studio, and I started working for the German University in Cairo, I continued to work on web design projects with my friends at robusta. In 2010 I got my first dSLR, a Canon EOS 550D also known as Canon Rebel T2i.
Today, robusta is a newborn company specialized in digital media design and social marketing solutions and I'm still trying to get a graphic and media design degree. Read Less
