There are a load of sites starting 'bountys' for work submitted to a brief, where a client uploads the brief, gets a bunch of submissions, and pays the winning designer the bounty fee. Sometimes the competition is fierce, but you'll be surprised how easy it can be to answer a brief and win the dollars when you least expect it ;). Check out www.bootb.com and www.ideabounty.com.
I've also heard of www.getafreelancer.com but never really tried it, myself. Some people get lots of jobs via that website. It looks like the competition is fierce there, though.
I've tried Get a Freelancer, and I may be a little picky, but the price range that people are looking for is too low for me to pick up one of those projects. And it seems like a lot of them are rush jobs as well. Basically, the clients look for the lowest bid instead of the best quality of work. I tend to stay away, unless someone can tell me a better way to get a higher bid and still get my work chosen.
