ARTIST SEREN MORAN BIOGRAPHY
Seren Moran was born in 1989 in Berkeley California. Growing up in a home that valued the arts, she spent her childhood practicing dance, theatre, and music. Seren was a born artist, with a fearless energy and stubborn curiosity. With no formal training, she spent her adolescent years collaging everything in her possession, from paper to furniture, eventually even her walls.
SERENDIPITIES
In the fall of 2007 Seren entered the undergraduate art program at San Diego State University, majoring in Studio Art with an emphasis in Painting. She spent her third year of college abroad in Florence Italy studying at L’Accademia di Bella Arte. While abroad, she learned the language and immersed herself in the Italian culture, gaining a European perspective facilitating her in an interest in self-exploration. This introspection inspired her Serendipities (q.v. her name), a series of self-portraits in an eclectic display of styles.
PORTALS
Upon returning to the States for her final year at San Diego State University, European experience became the main theme in her artwork. Bringing home images of windows, doors, and steps from various buildings and dwellings she’d seen throughout her travels, Seren’s Portals represent her cultural shift back to the US. Jumping between expressionistic and geometric styles, her portals reflect her playfulness with the relationships between line, value and space.
FATHER SERIES
Approaching graduation, sudden changes in Seren's delicate relationship with her father encouraged her next set of paintings, Father Series. She spent her final months at SDSU engaged in the emotionally charged portraits of her father.
PANGEA
In May, 2011, Seren received her BA in Painting from San Diego State University. Immediately after graduation, she moved back to the Bay Area to begin work on her next, rather large, painting Pangea. Inspired by her many international friendships, Seren created the 28 portrait painting of people she has known, all born in different countries around the world. Since then, Seren has moved to Brazil, where she is currently living and painting in Sao Paulo.
In her body of work, Seren touches on her experiences with fragmentation and displacement, her acute awareness of herself and of others, and the fluidity of that self. Read Less
