Sarah Kelpin is the Creative Director for emerging women’s ready-to-wear brand, Lark & Hazel. Born and raised in Canada, from the early age of 12, it was Kelpin’s desire to make her mark in fashion. Kelpin’s creative fervor developed; including painting and illustration, and in her early teens she took clothing into her own hands: enrolling in sewing and then flat-pattern design classes.
In 2006 she registered for the advanced Fashion Design program at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. Her progressive talent was quickly noticed, as demonstrated by her receipt of the class’s “Best Overall Design” title in her freshman year. Throughout her university stay she would participate in a number of extracurricular fashion shows and events, gaining industry experience and amassing contacts. Before her graduation in 2009 she would develop superior illustration, pattern-making and draping skills, as well as the more artistic acumen like creative direction and concepting. All of this would well-equip her for what was to come next-an almost immediate thrust into the big leagues.
After graduating she began styling test shoots for local modeling agency, Anita Norris Model Management. Here she learned the ins and outs of modeling and photography, and quickly accumulated a substantial Styling clientele -both close to home and in Toronto. She traveled extensively and enthusiastically from shoot to shoot.
With portfolio in hand, Sarah flew to Toronto to meet with Nazmul Bhuiyan, Founder and Director of Anchor Heights, Ltd. She had replied to an ad placed by the textile manufacturer, seeking a Technical Designer. It took only one meeting for her fresh, playful and romantic ideas to capture the imagination of Bhuiyan, who decided swiftly to finance and develop a new line of Women’s Wear which they would collaborate closely on. The two would engender a prolific partnership in what was to become Lark & Hazel. The brand encompassing daywear, eveningwear, outerwear and jewelry softly launched for Fall/Winter2011.
“I'm most confident in my ability to produce quality pieces with a fresh and feminine point of view”, declares the young designer whose favorite fashion lines include Chanel, Alberta Ferretti and Chloe. “My inspirations stem from nature or natural concepts- brought about in an air of whimsical nostalgia.” Read Less
