For some time now I have endeavoured to find a way of working that operates on a visceral level. I use gestural mark making juxtaposed to crafted figuarative elements in order to cause a contrast and conflict as well as flirting with typographical elements. These elements are ingredients that undertake a process that forms an important part of my practice, this tension I believe is the key to my engagement with the work. I experienced this tension on first discovering Francis Bacon and since then Goya, Caravaggio, Beckmann as well as Picasso. I never wish to dictate fully how each piece will conclude and always have reservations about where a painting finishes, however rely upon a awkward stumbling forward until no further changes can be made. I find myself re-purposing furniture, antique photographs, sheet music, packaging in order to reminisce and re-direct, these items are already loaded with information ready for re-interpretation.
