I live on top of a hill in a place very close to paradise. Coral Sea waters lap the golden beaches on the edge of our village and pretty faced wallabies nibble the lime green shoots along the bamboo avenue of our road. The night skies glisten and the morning air is clear and sweet.
The perfect habitat for an artist, especially one whose work reflects love of colour and light. My paintings are very real impressions of what I see where ever I am and also of what I dream to see through my 8" telescope. As an amateur astronomer, the deep sky objects have always been my passion..
Light, temperature, aura - all have colours of their own. I try to strip away the mundane mask that covers the true essence of a place, person, animal or object. Seeing light is a very abstract process. The brain gives our eyes so many assumptions but seeing then painting what really is there, that's my raison d'être.
I have been taught/inspired by some of the greatest artists the world has known; the old masters such as Rembrandt, Velazquez, Vermeer etc.; 19th century impressionists, in particular Monet, as well as a myriad of contemporary realists and impressionists. Works of these artists have provided an infinite amount of information that I have greedily digested. The Masters' voices seem to whisper to me as I am painting, ‘soften the edge here, add a little more light there, go ahead make that mark, and leave it!’.
Accompanying my professional artist sister to Europe for an intensive five months studying the Old Masters techniques, I was fascinated but I never expected I would use the knowledge. How wrong I was, thankfully! And how grateful I am now that I learnt the 'how to' in such an environment.
There is no desire in me to create any form of ugliness or shocking confrontation. The television has that totally in hand! My ultimate aim, like that of many others, is to leave this life having added beauty and joy and something of my sense of wonder.
Creation/Nature itself is my ultimate source of knowledge and inspiration—enabling me to emote the essence of the subject and hopefully in a profound and powerful way.
