Glasswork is based on light. Refractions, shadows, and odd beams of light are influential and decisive on the final results, yet I insist on going beyond just the surface.
I’ve started my professional career as a graphic designer. The background on commercial art, allows me to develop my ideas by manipulating digital images on Photoshop. When I piece together fragmented images from memories, formed by moments half observed and then forgotten, I reach a familiar place where I explore an ambiguous shifting space. Glass becomes then a sort of medium chosen where I apply these prospects.
My artwork focus on the country/urban infrastructure dominating our landscape – nature and the way the human being adjusts and controls it. I delight in the incoherent imagery glimpsed through my car window while looking over at successive scenes. When I piece together this drive-by landscape my mind flies away and new ideas arise representing my feelings, my dreams. The subject is, ultimately, unimportant for me - it's all about inner emotions.

Lula Torgersen is a visual artist who was raised overseas and lives in Houston for the last 10 years. Art has always been an important part of her life. Growing up on Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and being raised by her artist parents, she learned at an early age to explore and express emotions through the use of a variety of media and materials.
She has a bachelor degree in Communications, with specialization in Public Relations, but has started her professional career as a graphic designer. The passion for glasswork started on her first visit to Murano, Italy. While living for a few years in Scandinavia, she found the chance to travel around, visiting many glass studios and factories throughout the area and observing numerous techniques. This is where she discovered glass fusing. It was love at first try. Since then her passion for glasswork has only grown stronger.

In 2007, Lula Torgersen started her art business LULART. Since then, Lula's energy is devoted to working with glass in recognizing its beauty, multidimensional qualities and allowing the materials to dictate design. The evolution of her work is to allow the glass to free itself into its natural liquid state, directing its flow, and then freezing that shape.

Worried about the environment, the world is promoting reutilizing anything possible produced by mankind. Recycling is in fashion, but still in need of reinforcement. Every day we eat and drink from glass containers. It’s so easy: we pick them up from the supermarket shelves, bring them home, open them, savor their insides and… trash them! Lula started thinking of how wonderful it would be if she could use some of those scrap containers and transform them into art. Lots of other ideas came rolling down the steam of her imagination; only to reach the pieces you will view now.

Colors, shape and nature form an important role in her work. Her multicultural background has opened her horizons to a new-contextualized view of found objects. Using her expertise in glass art, she started using salvaged glass to create alternative art that are both experimental and sustainable. Rehabilitated, damaged, revised, reunited with metals and other reclaimed matters will become a variety of products handmade in her small home studio. After more than five years of working with expensive art glass, it came naturally to expand now to a new form of expression, using found glass and subsequently making art out of them. As I work with these objects, I become even more fascinated by the way they can be modified, going beyond the mundane and becoming artworks.
My challenge as an artist is to take these found glass, which might at first have no apparent dialogue, and to work with them until they speak and tell their story. Following that, I would like to send the underlying environmental messages inherent in the use of this kind of medium, and look forward to the possible discussion that these pieces may generate as a result.
Humanity is at a critical point in time, with our planet currently existing in a fragile ecological state, with global warming speeding up, with few changes being made, all amplifying the fact that we need all the help we can get.
Hopefully by making this art, it is a way of sharing my message for the need to care for our environment with a broad audience. Read Less
