Kate Garchinsky is a professional visual arts specialist with a BFA in Illustration from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, her former residence. She currently works as a freelance art director, illustrator and painter in Colorado. In addition to her work, she is a member of the (no name) Art Group, a non-profit artists' collective based in Philadelphia, and has been an author / illustrator member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators since 1999, providing volunteer design services for local chapters in Pennsylvania and Colorado. She is also a contributing artist to "Rough-Writers Ink," a bi-annual publication, and an art teacher for Streamside Art Co.
Artist's Statement
"I find my inspiration in the overwhelming beauty and the tiny details of nature. Since my days as a little snowbird I was taken by the growing, changing, adaptive creation around me. I spent many hours in solitude climbing my favorite Japanese maple tree, trying to get close to the wild birds and the squirrels (though I never really succeeded). It is this innocent, fascinated child that I tap into when I paint and when I write. My enjoyment of birds has crossed over into my adulthood and here it has intensified as I count the bird species who visit my feeders and sketch their shapes.

One of my favorite subjects, besides penguins, is snow. Here in Winter Park, Colorado we may receive over 300 inches of accumulation from October through May. From the tiny facets of a singular snowflake to bowls and crags of a snow-capped peak, the snow takes on the colors of the ambient light and its shadows in ways water cannot. It also holds onto the footprints of the animals who tread over it in the evening hours, evidence that this high alpine forest holds much more life than it appears to during the day.

My goal as an artist and illustrator is to inspire children and their parents to take a step back and see the wonders growing and changing around us, and to preserve it."
