1741 Media is a startup digital media company founded by online content leaders and backed by world class investors. We’re looking for a talented, passionate lead designer to join us in the Venice area of Los Angeles.

About the Project

‘1741’ is the working title for a new consumer media service we’re developing. While the exact nature of the project is (naturally) still under wraps, we are focused on the evolution of lifestyle and luxury publishing online.

We see huge opportunity to bring web consumers higher quality, more useful editorial content in categories including fashion, interiors, travel and culture. Our technology is designed to combine the high quality aesthetics ‘glossy’ print with the utility of the Internet. So what does that mean? Well, if you can imagine stunning magazine-style content you can search, save and share as simply as any link, you’re on the right track.

But technology alone isn’t enough. We are looking for a highly innovative, visual and utility-obsessed designer to lead the look, feel and user interface for this new property.

The 1741 team has a track record of integrating creative content, technology, distribution and advertising to deliver leading consumer experiences with scalable revenues.

We love products that combine ‘offline’ standards of content quality (aesthetics, editorial voice) with ‘online’ utility (search, personalization, syndication).Our experience spans Yahoo!, New York Times Digital, Electronic Arts and Monster.com, as well as successful startups including LAUNCH.com (now Yahoo! Music) and Abuzz.com (acquired by New York Times Co.).

Our products have grossed over $175 MM in advertising during the last 4 years, reaching over 10 MM monthly users with some of the most valuable content programs ever produced online.

Position: Design Director

The Design Director will oversee all visual and interaction design for the Company.The ideal candidate has both visual and interactive/industrial design experience, with big ideas for presenting high resolution, immersive images online.

We are looking for a senior design leader with 5-10 years experience, able to realize a product that is simultaneously beautiful, functional, intuitive and fun. We require you have solid experience designing for the web, a plus if combined with offline design experience in magazines, advertising, games or general product design.

You will work closely with our product and engineering teams to translate product requirements through interaction design/wireframes and final visual design.

Detailed responsibilities/qualifications:

* Able to integrate complex product requirements into innovative, elegant visual solutions

* Able to quickly, tangibly express solutions 'on paper/screen' with storyboards, wireframes and other prototypes

* Comfortable balancing user needs and business/market requirements

* Conversant in current web technologies (html, dhtml, ajax, flash)

*Excellent interpersonal skills, sense of humor and able to not take yourself too seriously (even though you totally rule)

*5-10 years overall design experience, focus on media and technology products preferred

* 3+ years web design experience, focus on consumer media products preferred

Extra consideration for:

* Experienced team builder and leader

* Experience as a key member of successfully launched sites

* Experience in glossy print design and/or photo editing

* Experience with entertainment-focused and advertiser-supported products
