Everything I do has some sort of creative bent. I'm a graphic designer, I take photographs and turn them into art (or use them for editorial purposes), I'm an editor and I love writing. Even my DIY obsession takes many an artistic turn. I'm obsessed with Twitter and the web and I take great pride in designing my own website even when it meant I had to teach myself Dreamweaver from scratch. Oh, and did I mention I like Macs?

Designer/Artworker/Data sorting

I work regularly with this studio in Knutsford on a regular contract to produce a catalogues and price guides for Hallis Hudson (http://www.hallishudson.com/). My main tasks involved gathering data from Excel files, converting and sorting for use in Quark Xpress, laying out catalogue pages with information and liaising with the client to ensure accuracy of the information published. Citigate Dewe Rogerson

From Mac Artworker to Production Manager

I began with DRCP as a Mac Artworker, carrying out fast, eye-catching layouts and corrections on a variety of publications. An eye for detail and series style was crucial as was a desire to work within a close-knit team. I excelled at all of these, but a small department meant promotion options were limited. I took a year at another publisher – see below– before being head-hunted back to a more senior role and later promoted to Production Manager.

An excellent communicator, I was the central point of contact between our in-house studio, editorial staff, clients and external suppliers. I used my knowledge of production to improve quality controls, trained staff in the required quality of supplied media and basic production needs. Site visits kept our repro, and print suppliers on their toes, and I took most client-handled distribution in-house to improve delivery times and accuracy.

I used my IT skills to improve and instigate server systems to increase workflow between departments. I trained all staff to use the new system.

Gee Publishing

Production Editor

A one-year contract standing in for the Production Editor who was on secondment. I had to hit the ground running with one week’s introduction before taking full control of design, production, subbing, proofing and print buying on two monthly titles: Gee’s PaY Monthly, and Mortgage Finance Gazette. I was offered a permanent role but was head-hunted back to DRCP.

Between The Lines

Owner

This began as sub-contract work for Clare Truscott Design as a book-keeper and administrator. I gradually learned all aspects of typography, graphic design and publishing. We invested in our first Apple Mac and set up in business together as Between the Lines. I have been using Macs as long as anybody in the UK, and I am still one of the fastest and most proficient Mac users in the publishing industry.

We designed children’s books for international publishers such as Penguin Books and Harper Collins, regularly employing three or four assistants.
