Overall Second Year: Product Design Technology
Self-Assessment and Criticism
James Pickard
After finishing my second year, I feel that I have covered and learnt a lot of information and design techniques to consider for my future as a ‘Product Design’. I will now describe and analysis what I have found by assessing how I struggled in the past and how I now feel that I can achieve higher in the coming future.
I would firstly say that I feel more confident and have made new friends since being split up into a mixture of different groups. This means that we all have to work as a team, communicating and working together to make sure we get the best possible product that we can achieve with the knowledge on-board. Before the mixture of the groups, I would normally go with people I knew from the start of first year, meaning that I would hardly speak to the others unless we had a course meeting.
My second area in which I have improved greatly is, my aspect and approach to design. Normally I would just go off, research the persona and information need and then get on with it. But since this year, I feel that I take a more lengthy and detailed approach making sure that I have all the information and more available so that I have a bigger imagination when it comes to the concept design area. This has also allowed me to spend more time re-arranging my work when it comes to the presentation stage, so that it really catches the user/client and makes them really fascinated by the design that I have created.
My third area that I feel that I have improved in is by learning new skills in rendering. By using SolidWorks to create the model, and then by importing it to KeyShot, to then complete the final render of my final product. This has allowed me to present to clients real looking products that I have designed, giving a realistic approach. Before this, I used to just use SolidWorks rendering kit, which was average, but nothing to the quality that KeyShot provide.
Overall I would say that my second year at Northumbria University has been very successful and has taught me a lot, and given me hints for my future career as a designer. Read Less
