Sonsbeek 2008, 'Servant Leader'

'Servant leader', my donation to the 10th Sonsbeek International Sculpture Exhibition, entitled 'Grandeur'. Artistic director Anna Tilroe has invited 28 artists of world renown to visualise the aspiration for human greatness. An exhibition about the urge, the dream, the conflict and the struggle that are linked to this aspiration. The works of art show 'Grandeur on a human scale'.

Out of the Box

It took two colleagues and me 6 hours to build a black box of 2.4 by 2.4 by 2.4 meters.

We asked two students to step into the box for two hours and fill up the memorycards of their digital camera’s, without being able to watch the results as they were working.

Photography is painting with light.
    * What if there is no light?
    * What if there is no subject?
    * What if there is no background?
    * What if there is nothing?
Put students in a black box to enlighten them.
Put students in a box to broaden their horizon.
The paradox of learning.
