Greg Maxson Illustration

Urbana, IL, USA
As a traditionally-trained technical illustrator, I've been producing clear and accurate visuals for over twenty-five years. I work regularly from sketches, photos, engineering drawings, and the actual products to illustrate various processes and products for some of the top studios, publishers, and manufacturers in the United States.

Work Experience

Greg Maxson Illustration

Chief Executive Draw-er

My first paid freelance illustration gig came when I was in college, when I signed on to produce an exploded view illustration of a backhoe for a start-up company. This was pre-internet and pre-digital camera, so the process involved me going to an individuals house, taking measurements, and creating sketches from the actual machinery as this person was fabricating the equipment in his garage. It was crazy, laborious, a great experience, and a lot of fun.

Since that time, I've had the privilege of working with dozens of great clients, across a wide variety of industries. From exploded views of products to new technologies to step-by-step graphics, and everything in-between.

Worked as senior illustrator, producing textbook illustrations for many of the top educational publishers in the U.S. At the same time, was also tasked with leading a group of illustrators on various art programs. Was responsible for working closely with our team of internal illustrators, freelancers, and the necessary contacts at the publisher to keep the art style consistent, the deliverables bullet-proof, and the projects on schedule.

For many years I was also an art director with the company, supervising 6-8 other illustrators. Duties included overseeing their workloads, exercising performance reviews, handling personnel matters, etc.
