About watchmycell
watchmycell is a project I worked on with my friend Prashanth Ranganathan. watchmycell is a desktop application written for Windows (although Mac support may come soon) that checks the user's carrier website to monitor cell phone usage and send alerts when an overage charge is nearing! For more information regarding watchmycell check out www.watchmycell.com.
Goals
watchmycell was created as a social awareness program also. We wanted people to realize just how much extra expenditure comes from factors as trivial as cell phone overages. Furthermore, we wanted to encourage people to use money that they would save from going over to help fund microcredit philanthropy via Kiva.org and social causes such as Invisible Children and the Save Darfur coalition.
Press
watchmycell has been very fortunate in receiving press coverage. The program is spread entirely via word of mouth. One major traffic source early on was a mention from the popular blog Lifehacker.com. Now, a few months later, we can add several radio shows, newspapers, tv shows and blogs to that list as well. Also, in June 2007, we were featured in Jacylene Badal's column in the Wall Street Journal.
