When designing this I originally had the "tables" set up as quasi-chairs, but then changed them to the flatter more table-like design you see here. The reasoning is people will always adapt objects to their own needs and never care about the designer's intentions. So, if one person is there he can easily lay his bag or books, etc. on the flat surfaces, if more than one person is there, the "tables" will automatically become "seats". The main goal was to create seating for informal areas where people will be meeting and interacting in small groups for short periods of time.
