jazz violin
I painted this violin for as an auction item for a local string academy fundraiser. The archival photos of the violin looked like they'd make a nice poster - so I did a little photoshop touch-up of the edges, added drop shadows and a light font treatment and am now selling the poster on my fineartamerica.com site.

During the painting process, I listened to a variety of violin music - from classical to jazz, bluegrass to alternative rock - trying to capture the many colors, textures and moods of the instrument.

This is the second instrument that I painted - the other was a guitar. This little "fine art stunt" works great as a media-attention-getting fundraiser. It's also a good way to involve a lot of different artists - all painting on the same basic shape - and seeing the extreme variety of art that the instrument inspires.

Production notes: Violins were stripped of varnish and primed white with Kilz prior to distributing to artists (good idea). I used acrylic paint and finished with a satin acrylic medium varnish. The poster was assembled in Photoshop - backgrounds dropped and drop shadows added.
