birds fall softly to the forest floor (everything is a cycle)
a false sense of invincibility is inherent to the act of being human, and often causes us to ignore the inevitability of death on a personal level. cyclical patterns are the essence of the natural world--day turns to night, summer to autumn, and life to the soil--yet fear accompanies our thoughts on the latter when faced with its application in our own lives. my avian sculptures attempt to remind viewers of the natural processes of death and degradation in a less frightening light.
this concept is reflected in the vertical arrangement of bird-shaped structures, which appear to drift towards the ground while decaying and accumulating organic matter. the uppermost bird remains a pristine, obviously man-made steel form, while the lowest has rusted under a dense layer of leaves, feathers, burlap, and other found materials. this visual transformation reinforces the truth of the impermanence of human presence in the world, and our eventual return to the earth we so often take for granted.
