Wax Trax Scented Candles

A playful product identity that riffs on the visual language of popular music.

International gift manufacturer and distributor Natural Products, were approached by funky high-street retailer Urban Outfitters, to supply a range of products that would resonate with their fun-loving customers.

Natural Products asked us to come up with a concept for a range of candles and design the packaging to fit in with Urban Outfitters eclectic style.

Our solution tapped into one of the target audiences' passions: music. We created an imaginary record label, ‘Wax Trax’, that hinted at the nature of the product with an explicit musical reference. The subsequent logo uses a familiar graphic equaliser device, but in the shape of a flame.

Through the record label, we were free to get creative with a range of musical genres, that would appeal to the customers’ varying tastes and style.

Each candle is packaged in a box that is designed to look like an album cover; the ‘title’ playing on a particular musical genre, with a candle-inspired twist. The reverse uses a track-listing style execution to describe how to use the candle in a tongue-in-cheek way, while the sides of the pack give the illusion of vinyl or CDs stacked up to help create a perfect point-of-sale opportunity.

The range has been a success in the UK, with an imminent launch planned for Urban Outfitters’ stores across the US.
