The Gombe Chimpanzee Blog
visit site

In September 2006, working with the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) I designed and published the first full blown “geo-blog”
to run entirely in the Google Earth Geo-Browser: The Gombe Chimpanzee Blog - a georeferenced Web log of updates about the lives of the famous chimpanzees living in Gombe National Park in Tanzania.

The blog was authored by field researcher Emily Wroblewshi, who is studying paternity among the chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania. Her entries allow Google Earth users everywhere to understand current research findings in the program begun by Dr. Jane Goodall in 1960.

In November 2006 we teamed with Google to launch the blog in the Global Awareness layer of the Google Earth Geo-browser.

JGI is using Google Earth in concert with other technologies to portray these issues to the Tanzanian government, as well as to work with local communities to develop land use plans that will establish a network of village-protected forest reserves outside the park.

The Gombe Chimpanzee Blog 2.0 - The Next Generation

In 2007 we relaunched the Gombe Chimpanzee Blog in a bold new website - using open-source tools I developed for the EarthWatchr project which grew out of the success of the original blog. The Gombe Chimpanzee Blog (GCB) was re -designed to take advantage of Google Maps and run
in a traditional browser and Google Earth simultaneously.

EarthWatchr geo-blogging software provided a fully customizable, content managed tool that allowed for researchers to  interactively build complex geo-located blog posts
entirely from within a browser, adding an integrated WYSIWYG and simple image editing tools. The new tool also gave bloggers the ability to "embed" complex Google Earth overlays to blog postings, which gave bloggers a powerful way to visualize complex environmental information about the park to visitors.
