3 is the Magic Number

Set one
In this set of photographs i decided to do close ups of a magic kit. I linked this to my project name by making it a magic kit to take photographs of. I choose to take photographs of these because i thought it was an interest topic to look at. I linked theses photographs to Irving Penn's photograph of after dinner games, i choose to link it too this photographs because there are some aspects of my photographs and his which are the same. I think my photographs are lively because there is a lot going on in the photograph because there is not just one thing to focus on. I decided to make some of the photographs half black and white and colour, this makes the photographs more interesting to look at because of the contrast between the colours.
Irving Penn After dinner games, photograph for vogue New York, 1947
I would describe this image as chaotic as it doesn’t just have one element to focus on, it has a lot of elements in the photograph and I am drawn to look at the whole photograph as a whole instead of one part of the photograph. This photograph is also disorientating because there is not just one thing to focus the attention of the viewer.   This is a full colour photograph, the colouring of the photograph is fairly subtle and muted because there are not many bright colours which would make it overbearing to look at.  The colours are also quite harmonious.  The light source in this photograph is natural light, I think this because in this photograph you can see the slight shadow the light is giving to the photograph. Also there is not a lot of lighting in this photograph so I do not think it is artificial light. I think there is only one source in this photograph because the shadow is going in one direction and you can see the light source coming from one side because some of the objects on the photograph are lit up more than others. The light quality in this photograph is soft because the shadows are not hard edged. The lighting is not extremely bright but not dim either. The light source is coming from one side because of the way the shadow is facing and the way that some of the objects are lit more than others.   The composition of this photograph is unbalanced, it is not symmetrical, I would say it is unbalanced all over in the photograph because there is not just one part of photograph that is more weighted than another due to the elements being roughly all around the photograph.  The photograph is taken from a medium viewpoint because it is directly on to all the objects in the photograph. The lens used in this photograph is standard because it is not a close up of anything in the photograph and also it is not really a horizontal photograph so a wide-angle lens would not need to be used. I think there is a standard perspective because nothing is exaggerated or flattened in this photograph, so it is coming from a standard perspective.  In this photograph I think that photographer is trying to get the message across about gambling and after dinner happenings in New York. Also I think he is trying to portray what comes along with gambling. My own personal opinion on this photograph is that it will help me link my photographs to it and has helped me with my own still life photographs of similar subjects.  I think the strongest elements in this is the unusual composition, this is a strong element in my opinion because all of the parts in this photograph have not really been arranged in any way so it’s all quite unbalanced and non-symmetrical. I think another strong element in this photograph is the lighting this is a strong element in this photograph because its not overly lit and not under lit, the lighting in this picture lights up certain parts and you can see the clearly shadow by using natural light for this photograph it also high lights the natural element of the photograph.  I am going to link this photograph to a set of my pictures by making the background plain and simple. Also I will be using cards in my photograph so the link to magic and the link to gambling in this photograph taking by Irving Penn.
Set Two In these set of pictures i choose to use the three wise monkeys as to look at things or objects that can come in threes. The three wise monkeys are hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil. I choose this as the first set of pictures i took so i can get an idea of what else to take photographs of. In these set of photographs i have choose to change the editing on them, i took photographs of the same person and put it into one photographs so it can show all three of the different emotions being shown in these photographs. In the first three photographs of this section it was one of my models just normally doing all three of the hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil, i decided to edited these. These photographs were only really experiments firstly to see how they would look once i have taken and edited them also it was to think about what else i can do for my project. In these set of photographs i took them of three different people then of triplets, once i had taken them of the triplets it linked me to my next idea for my project of doing photographs of the triplets.
Set three
Diane Arbus, Identical twins, Roselle, N.J. 1967 Diane Arbus was born in New York City in 1923 and married Allan Arbus at the age of 18. Arbus started taking photographs in the 1940’s and studied photography with Berenice Abbott and then in 1950’s studied photography with Alexey Brodowitch. She first published her work 1960 in Esquire. Arbus traveled across the country, photograph people, places and events. A selected group of these photographs attracted a great deal of critical and popular attention when they were featured along with the work of two other photographers.  The photograph fits into the genre of documentary because Arbus takes the photographs of people that she met whilst traveling. It can be described as explanatory because the photograph clearly portrays a pair of identical twins with two different emotions. The style of this photograph is traditional; I think it is traditional because of the way the twins are standing and by what they are wearing.

Personally the photograph makes me feel uneasy because of the way the identical twins are stood side by side too each other wearing the same clothing, but presenting different facial expressions. The twin on the left one has a slight frown smile on her face and the twin on the right has a subtle smile. Their facial expressions are showing two different things, I think this shows that even if there may be two things that look exactly the same they may not feel the same. The photograph has been taken in portrait format this is so that the photographer can get the whole of the twins in the photograph. The background of this photograph is plain and simple, nothing is going on in the background so its not hard to get distracted from the main purpose of this photograph. By making It plain it is making the photograph plain but yet you still want to look at it because the twins are the main attraction of the photograph. The composition is balanced in the way that they both look the same and are wearing the same and are standing exactly the same in the middle of the frame. The photograph has been taken from a medium viewpoint because it is directly onto the twins it has not got an angle on the photograph. The type of lens that has been used is standard and there Is a standard perspective. The composition is balanced and simple.

The photograph is monochrome and i believe the desiderated element adds to the emotions and the look of the two girls. This element adds emotion because it is not showing any colour it’s plain and simple like the clothes they are wearing and their facial expressions by using this element there is nothing else to focus on but the people in the photograph. There is a very limited tonal range due and very subtle shadows. The photograph has a slight contrast between light and dark, and I think the use of a soft light enhances the mood of the photograph.
The strongest elements of this is the fact the twins are standing symmetrical in the photograph. This has an impact on my viewer because they need to think that my work can link to this photograph many viewers that look at this photograph would probably find it all and strange, so I have to somehow link one of the elements of this photograph to my photographs i am taking. In my work I will be focusing on capturing triplets and parallel the simple composition of the photograph.
Set Four
In this set of photographs i took photographs of 16 people on a plain background. I took for photographs of each person from four different angles which were from the front, from the back and from both sides. I edited these photographs by cropping them and cutting out all the unnecessary background that will take the viewers concentration from the person to the other surroundings. I used Richard Avedon as an author to look at while taking these photographs because most of the photographs he has taken have been a plain background and a person standing there straight infront of the camera.

Mini-Link
This photograph is a mini-link to the set of photographs that i have taken. I have used this as a mini-link because i have taken similar photographs to the artist Rineke Dijkstra. I looked at this photography and decided to take a set of photographs. I choose to take these photographs of people on a plain background because it brings more attrations the people themselves and there mannerisms. I will use these photographs for another set of photographs.
In these set of photographs i used the other plain photographs. I edited the other photographs of the 16 people, i had to choose certain people from certain directions. Once i had choosen my photographs i experimented with them, i printed them out then cut the photograph into three different sections, head and shoulders, mid part of the body and the hips downwards. Once i had cut the bodies into three different parts i had to put them back together but with different peoples bodies, i link this with the title of my project by using magic in the photographs like the magic tricks when cutting people up. I re photographed the photohgraphs once i had put them back together with different peoples bodies, i experimented with male and female bodies mixed together to give it a different kind of look.
Richard Avedon I would describe this photograph as calm and tranquil because it doesn’t have too many things going on at once, it is one person and it doesn’t have too many elements that you have to try and focus on. I would also describe this photograph is plain and simple because there is not a lot going on in the photograph to make the photograph more fascinating. This is a black and white photograph; it doesn’t have a wide tonal range so it is very limited in that sense. I think that the photograph being black and white has an impact on the photographs quality. In this photograph by making it black and white it is making it very limited in what you are looking at in the photograph for example the man could have had on a very bright suit which would have taken the quality out of the photograph because it would be too much to look at in the photograph. The light source is artificial because the photograph looks like it has been taken in a white studio which makes the man stand out more and it is more illuminated. There is only one light source in this photograph because then are no shadows so the light source must be coming from straight onto the man.  The lighting quality is harsh and intense because it has man the man stand out more and you can see how the light is make the white behind the man stand out more. The lighting quality is also strong because you can see that the light is very powerful so that it gets the full outline of the man. The light is coming from in front of the subject. The composition of this photograph is symmetrical and balanced in the body of the man because he is doing exactly the same on both sides of his body. On his face it is not balanced because of his expression and the way his head is towards on direction. The photograph has been taken from a medium viewpoint, because there is no angle on the man, and you can not see shadows it is directly in front of the man. The type of lens used has been a standard because it is not of a horizon so there would be no need for a wide angle lens to be used and it is not a close up on the man it is of half of his body so a standard lens would have been used. There is a standard perspective because nothing is flattened or exaggerated. I think the strongest element of this photograph is the composition because it is the same on both sides, and there is no other real element of this photograph.  I also think that the tonal range in this photograph is a strong element as well because there are only two main colours to concentrate on in this photograph. I will link these to my photographs by taking a set of photographs that have a plain background and will get all of the people to stand in for different directions.
Evaluation

At the beginning of this project i looked at all possibilities of sets of photographs that i can take. I looked at different artists that may help me throw my project.
