Description
Tanpopo is my second self-published work, released in the Spring of 2007 in a limited edition print run. Drawn in my manga-style, the 24-page book is inspired by Goethe’s dramatic poem, Faust. The protagonist is Tanpopo, a young girl who makes a pact with Mephistopheles to release her from her melancholic existence. This edition contains original excerpts from Faust, and will be the 1st in a series of stories as Tanpopo explores humanity in the context of other traditional literary pieces, which I hope to bring to the public in a new way, and share with everyone my love of poetry and literature
  • A small selection of pages ...
  • Tanpopo is my self-published book, based on Goethe's Faust, with a manga girly twist I couldn't resist. I love Tanpopo, it is a passion project that I hope to take to the world.

The illustrations are mine, but the text is the original (translated) text from Faust. I love the juxtaposition of the text with the story, which in and of itself is beautiful and full of wisdom eternal.

The story is about Tanpopo, who has superhuman knowledge and is at the same time unnaturally void of emotion. Kuro, aka Poodle, is the Devil in disguise. He promises Tanpopo freedom, love, happiness, in the pursuit of what it means to be human - through experiencing human emotion.

But, as with all things that seem to good to be true, Kuro is secretly lusting after Tanpopo's soul which she has unknowingly exchanged for this adventure and search for her own humanity.

The story of Tanpopo and Kuro will be told through several volumes, each based on a classic piece of literature, poem, opera, prose or play. The second volume is based on Samuel Coleridge's 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.
