Online zine 'Hikikomori' is intended to serve as an appetizer motivating viewer to find out more about this relatively new phenomena.

‘Hikikomori’ are individuals suffering from a personality disorder forcing them to lock themselves up in a closed space, sometimes for years.

Determinant factor here is social failure: escape from a number of responsibilities, pressure to be successful, inability to fulfill expected social roles and so on. As a result people choose to retire into themselves and degrade. This process demonstrates a double-function erosion: self-destruction and violation of society’s integrity through gradual loss of its indispensible ‘elements’ - people.

I focused more on the eroding nature of withdrawal. Life of hikikomori is visualized through the atmosphere and aesthetics of personality erosion.
Here body language serves as a symbol of the rupture of an equilibrium, locked and immobile, even wounded. The inside erosion process is brought to the surface mimicing wounds of the soul through visible scars. With their help I strive to reproduce the chill of emptiness and panic, fear of the outer space and slow mutilation of perception. Silent monologues are recited with the use of some vaguely sculpted typography on the bodies of models. It is a mess and the message is too hard to decypher. But there is no one around to read it.
