Michael Garrett: Skinned
This was a really fun, quick project for Print class. We were assigned to create a book cover for our autobiography. My thought process started with the fact that it was an autobiography. I wanted to really play on the idea of getting in my head, under my skin. Since I'm irish (or at least I look it) I wanted to try and recreate a Celtic knot as a tattoo and a leather binding as skin, freckles and all. An autobiography is all about getting to know someone by looking into their head, right?
At this point I'm taking the finished lines, blowing them up and taking white lines to show the depth of the knot. I did a little research and this seemed like the best way to do it.
This is the final mockup before I actually transferred it over to leather. The knot looks pretty damned good, huh?
This is the final product. I wish I could show you the final leather piece in person. It's pretty freakin awesome. I scanned it in and added a bar code and some description of the imaginary book. I used ebony wood stain for the Celtic knot, some sharpie for the text and white paint for skinned. Everything had to be cut out in stencil beforehand... a pain in the ass, but well worth the final product.
