REDSHIFT: A Graphic Novel Anthology
in association with Cork City Library
in association with Cork City Library
The graphic novel (or comic book, or sequential art - whatever your preferred descriptor) has been steadily rising in popularity and mainstream acceptance in recent times, both as a mode of expression for authors and artists, and as a valid literary commodity for all kinds of readers. The savvy directors of Cork City Library's Young Adult's Department wanted to acknowledge and embrace this trend, by involving local teenagers in the production of their own anthology of graphic novel-style stories.
The call was put out to schools all over Cork City, and a select group of writers and artists was established from the initial 50+ applicants. A series of intensive workshops took place in late February and March of 2009: the Writers' Workshops were led by the project's Story Editor John W. Sexton; the Artists' Workshops by its Art Director Alan Barrett. The writers delivered a detailed final script, comprising 7 stories of varying lengths. Different artists were then appointed to interpret and illustrate each of these stories.
The result was a 22-page paperback 'comic book', titled Redshift - a reflection of the themes of transformation, identity (and gore!) found inside. The book was launched by French graphic artist Stephane Heuet on 24th April 2009, designated the Teen Day of World Book Festival 2009.
Photos, images and spreads of the book can be found below. Each story is preceded by writer and illustrator credits.
Copies of Redshift can be obtained from Cork City Library, or by contacting Alan B. through his website.
