Morning Walk
By Johnny Lucus

Yesterday morning I decided to go on walk around my neighborhood a few blocks away from downtown Seattle. I wanted to capture the poignant energy of yards and alleys, touching on themes of freedom, isolation, and the small details comparing organization/ disorganization. For this series I drew a little bit of inspiration from the work of Roger Mertin and Jo Ann Walters. Any critique is greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Hey Johnny, just had a look at your work, reminds me of what David Hurn gave us to do years ago as a project on 'seeing.' We had three rolls of film and had to take a walk and capture a 'composed' photograph every five minyes of that walk. It's good to see that principle in use some years later. Many photographer / image makers forget to look when they are out with a camera especially now when image making is so instant. Clicking a shutter doesn't make you a photographer, it just means you can push a button on a camera. It good to see someone who 'looks' before they shoot. For me, the colour stuff works better although, some have a blue cast and some banding. The B&W stuff just doesn't sit well within the project. Did you just desaturated the images or are they scanned B&W negs or wet prints? Anyway, you've got some good images to build on, technique can be learned, an eye for image you either have or you don't and you've got the makings of a good eye. Take more walks, shoot more and enjoy. $
