LITTLE ITALY
This project aims to create a series of portraits of Italian business owners in my home-town of St. Albans. Many of these people came to Britain as children with their parents as first generation immigrants after the war when Southern Italy was in a great time of hardship, and others were born here to parents whom came from Italy, such as myself.
Upon arrival, the language difference meant that many of the Italians had to go into jobs that utilsed their skills as craftsmen, such as mechanics, tailoring or barbering. These businesses were supported by the ever-growing Italian community, and ever-more-so by the existing British community, who became reliant on many of the shops and services.
Today the city thrives and the Italian community is fully integrated into the society, adding to the richness of the city. With these portraits I wish to throw a good light on the unfortunately taboo subject of immigration. Showing that with willingness and trust many kinds of people can live along-side each other happily.
Through photographing them I wish to record a time in their lives, and in my own, surrounded by the ever-changing social network they inhabit.
