This work is an entry into an infographic contest being run by GOOD. The assignment was to create an infographic that explores how much corporate officers in this country are paid. The infographic could compare such data with related figures, like a company’s profits, stock price, or the average salary of lower-level workers, or something else altogether. The winning entry will be the one that paints CEO salaries in the most interesting light.

I have been a corporate employee for decades and I still don't understand why the salary gap is so extreme. I understand all the arguments very well of the trials and tribulations of CEOs and the level of accountability they have for running a profitable business. But what I don't understand, especially in the wake of the recent economic crises, is how CEOs can still pull down such large salaries while laying off lower level employees all justified with the reasoning that cutting employees cuts overhead costs. In my mind even taking a 2% cut out of their annual salaries and bonuses would save the livelihood of a great number of employees.

My argument of course seems to be a moral one, which really has no place in the world of business which is run by finance.

This is the piece I submitted.

They rise on the backs, not the shoulders, of those beneath them.
