This is my Degree project, completed just this very month, for the Degree Exhibition showing this month.
Immerse is the name of a product I created for the purpose of my degree project. It is a set of designs are meant to be updated every season, inspired by the latest fashion style among 18-25 year olds. The designs are interior wall designs for the home, each one designed specifically to compliment the purpose of the room it is to be displayed in. This is an influence of my research into Environmental Psychology, which proclaims that every single room has it's very own purpose that cannot be violated. For instance, the bedroom is a place of relaxation and intimacy, never work. Each designs purpose is described in it's respective caption.
Truly the most fascinating and rewarding part of this project is that the designs are to be displayed digitally; on a future development of "e-paper" into e-wallpaper. Those familiar with e-books such as the Amazon Kindle and iLiad e-book will be aware of the increasingly popular and rapidly developing technology of "e-paper". Well, my idea was that one day it will be developed to have a refresh rate and colour capabilities far surpassing that of current screen technology, and may be opperated over large areas, such as walls. This would enable people to replace their wallpaper with "e-wallpaper", finding no difference at all, except the most important: digital capabilities. And this, would be how my designs are to be displayed.
However, as these capabilities do not yet exist; for the purpose of my display, I designed a way to emulate the idea. To do this, I created a "cut-out", almost life sized mock-up of a room (basically a small piece of one side of a room, with 2.9m of wall, and 1m perpendicualr to be a corner.). Then, by creating this with a specialised frame thanks to the help of my dad, I rear projected, using two projectors,my images onto the screen. The images are controlled by the user, via a basic Flash Application that I created for switching between images and reading about the project itself.
Unfortunately, my camera is currently in limbo, so I will have to wait for the press release (The Waikato province's newpaper chose to do a story on my project) images to display photographs of the display in action.
