Forth From Its Hinges is a forward-thinking hybrid art & music festival held annually in Ann Arbor, combining fine art, film screenings and installations with a stage filled with musical acts. It's free to attend, families are welcome, and with each year, this being the third annual, FFIH has grown more and more popular. Scroll down to the bottom to read more about my contribution.

I was asked by the folks running FFIH 2009 to come up with a poster
that held the lineup of musical acts to be performing on Friday and
Saturday. Like many design prompts, I took the name Forth From Its
Hinges very literally. I pictured a man falling through space,
clinging to a door, the one sane and recognizable thing which even
itself has sprung forth from its hinges and into this new dimension.
The falling man's position is inspired by the famous film poster for
Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, but by no means is it a reproduction, the
posture of the FFIH man needed to me more of a non-gravitated one. The
original concept had him falling into some sort of fantastically
colorful nebula, but Zach Saginaw, my good friend and one of the shows
organizers (and performers, as Shigeto/Frank Omura) suggested having
pictures of the musicians in there somewhere. I liked this idea almost
instantly, because I could see their imagery projected onto old 60's
style viewing screens, giving the entire poster a more prominent
classic sci-fi/conspiracy feel. This feeling is reinforced with the
presence of an unseen man, revealing only his leg, somehow propelling
both the falling man and the door (Room 3770, the address of the FFIH
warehouse) into the new dimension. Only Moodgadget co-founder Adam E.
Hunt and I know who exactly the unseen kicker is, we are considering
revealing yet another link in this unfolding mystery soon, so keep an
eye out!
