Easter Island (Rapa Nui)

Easter Island (Rapa Nui to natives and Isla de Pascua to Chile) is the most isolated bit of inhabited land on the planet, located 2,300 miles off the coast of Chile and 1,100 miles from Tahiti. It occupies but 64 square miles of otherwise deserted ocean. In spite of its size, Rapa Nui never ceases to fascinate. Not the least of the attractions are the close to a thousand Moai, man-made giants, scattered from shore to shore, in various states of renovation, decay and even creation.

Project Rapa Nui is ongoing. The original goal was to spend a year on the island, mid 2006 to mid 2007. Similar to the Acadia project, I sold pledges for work to be done, scheduling an exhibit and reception a few months after our return. We loved the place so much we returned for another three months in 2008 and plan a 17 week stay again in 2009.

I began this project shooting film, 120 format. About a third of the way through I began developing my digital skills. By the time the year was over, I was 100% digital. The final 40 images, below, are about 60% digital.
