Charming Reminder is beautiful, original way of organising your day by accessorising a door chain with silver-plated charms. It can be used to remind yourself or the people you live with of special events or just everyday tasks. There is a core set of nine charms: umbrella, telephone, key, present, plug, newspaper, letters, sports shoe and a shopping basket.
Inspiration came when using Jane Fulton Suri's method of looking at Thoughtless Acts. I took hundreds of picture around homes and compiled a bokk of 100 hundred ideas: Thoughtful objects from thoughtless acts. I found in this research that people often accessorise their doors by hanging coats, bags, scarfs etc on hooks and handles. This lead me to look into jewellery and charm bracelets and from this I learnt about how they promote sentiment and memory. This is therefore how charming reminder developed.
“Iliked the idea of having a contrast between jewellery and security. It is kindof ironic or as Bill Gaver said about the idea, ‘a little bit of random delightfor functional objects.” Eachindividual charm starts out as a hand drawn illustration that gets etched on to3 mm Perspex and cut out using a laser-cutter. These are then used as models tomake the silicone moulds that the pewter charms get cast from. When the charmsare not in use, they will on display in an expertly crafted reclaimed birchpine cabinet.
