The Portland Funbook was an interesting challenge for me. The main rule/guideline for any music submitted was that it had to be at or under 1 minute in length, whereas most of my music is in the 4-7 minute range. But I welcomed the challenge and gave it my best shot.

I had written an island-y/fun song with my friends, Prof. ABT!, Amy Kuttab & Tea Cup, about a magical island where dinosaurs still roamed the beaches, guarding a mythical jewel known as the Black Prism. No one knew what powers the Black Prism would bestow the beholder, but it was sought after just the same. I decided to tell the story of the island with two 12-year-old kids in the late Summer of 1992, who found the island of the Black Prism by chance.

The biggest obstacle I had to overcome was creating a song that told a story in one minute. It had to feel fulfilling, satisfying and not like the song cheated the listener out of an enjoyable experience.

Take a listen for yourself, and enjoy the one-minute version of, "Black Prism."

Thanks Jon! I'll be sure to post an addendum if the piece is accepted into the compilation.
