Children’s fairy tales such as ‘Cinderella’ or ‘Sleeping Beauty’
endorse a very stereotypical idea of ‘beauty’. Those who do not appear
physically beautifulare often regarded as possessing an evil or
untrustworthy character. In modern society, physical beauty is often
celebrated more than inner beauty. The lyrics andtone ofmany 20th
century songs also adhere to this stereotype.

Encased in a pseudo-jewellery box, these two handmade books,
inspired by fairy tales, aim to intensify the message and tone of the
songs ‘You’re so vain’ by Carly Simon and ‘Unpretty’ by TLC. The books
also aim to encourage the reader to recognise and reconsider the
stereotypes surrounding beauty today.
