Barrio North

An eclectic brand identity that fuses modern and traditional styles to reflect a unique culture of community.

Barrio North is an innovative new bar offering in North London’s vibrant Islington area. The Spanish translation for the word ‘Barrio’ is neighbourhood. The spirit of community that this word represents in the Latin American and Iberian cultures in cities around the globe defines the attitude and values of the brand.

We were asked to create a brand identity that expressed this culture of community. The solution needed to strongly differentiate the new offering from the competition through distinctive signage and promotional material.

We began the project by asking what makes a community. The representation of a district or neighbourhood through it’s footprint was our starting point. We created a map-like configuration of tiles that reflected the unique formation of blocks and connecting streets that shape a city, town, district or ‘barrio’.

Adding an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary, brightly-coloured and patterned tiles extends this metaphor: the idea of a fusion of cultures " the evolving identity and social diversity within a community.

This system provided a powerful and flexible framework for the application of the brand across all touch-points. From the interior architecture and signage which features custom-made tiles and eccentric one-offs from reclaimers' yards and eBay; to tile-shaped business cards and vibrant marketing material that invites people to join the Barrio community.

The Barrio bar front (second image) features a custom built sign, made entirely from tiles. To create an authentic, eclectic look, used tiles sourced from reclaimers’ yards, eBay and second-hand stores were mixed with our own custom designs.

The logo and it’s letterforms are the only fixed elements across all applications of the brand.

Monthly event programmes (November front and October reverse shown) continue the found-theme, with scanned, or digitally recreated tiles used alongside our own designs that continually change from month to month.
