ARTIST SPACE
Artist Space was an undergraduate studio project with a local site in New Orleans. The program called for a small live/work space that included an artist's studio, gallery and living quarters. The site is located in a densely populated urban area. Each student was asked to develop a two story scheme which filled the entire lot and the adjacent lots on either side are occupied by other student schemes.
Exploration of a design concept began with photographing the site's immediate and citywide context. Special attention was paid to spatial relationships and barriers, including fences, gates, shutters, and interior courtyards. Through the photographic investigation of the city, a language of void space created by eroded solids began to emerge.
The photographic explorations led to a form finding experiment in which we were instructed to created a box to display the photographs. Much like the city itself the primary form of the box is a grid matrix. Individual spaces are created by cutting away the grid. These void spaces become the “gallery” spaces for the photograph display. This idea of creating space by voids within solids became the central concept of the design. Using computer software, a solid box form was created and manipulated, then divided up to create cutting templates for the plyood slices.
These scale independent ideas are reinterpreted to form the program. Dynamic spaces are created by eroding the "solid" plywood matrix and become the livable areas of the building. An interior courtyard is created to allow in ample natural light iand act as the main artist gallery.
