Shadowplay

Fairground sounds float through blackness. A crack of light appears and a handful of curious children file into a small circus tent to glimpse what lies within. Inside the dark confines of the tent a shadow play begins. At first the children’s faces light up with glee but it soon becomes apparent that they will get more than they bargained for. The ancient machine seems to be controlled not by the hand of a puppet master but instead it appears to have a life of its own. Innocently at first it soon twists into a show of strange and amazing hand deformations as peculiar mechanical whirring noises escape into the tent. The children realise to their horror that the machine is drawing its energy from their small bodies stealing their hands to be used as part of the macabre display.

Ionisation

The project began life as a film to accompany a performance by the London Sinfonietta of Edgard Varese’s Ionisation. An inspiring 20th century composer who pioneered works that cross over into the electronic scene of today.
The piece shows what you can achieve when people collaborate in an unventilated environment where superglue fumes outweigh the oxygen 6:1. The machines were made by our fair hands and animated in our small studio flat in the east end of London. We all still have tiny bits of clock and metal lodged under our skin which is a slight concern.

Squarepusher 'Port Rombus'

Commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and Warp Records as part of the Warp Works and 20th Century Masters show this video is an accompaniment to the Squarepusher track, Port Rhombus.

This video stands as our homage to Stanley Kubrik’s vision of Artificial Intelligence, HAL from 2001. Our idea was to show a visual representation of Squarepushers music reflected in the lens of a camera. From spending lots of our time looking at things through cameras we found this an interesting approach, to look at the lens which in turn is looking at a subject.

Mira Calix: Tour Visuals

In early 2007, after working with her on the highly successful Warp Works, Mira Calix asked us to create the visuals for her live shows. It was important to make something bold and colourful but which also communicated Mira’s organic approach to music making. By filming the process of using overhead projectors to create images composed of plants, drawings, shapes and colour we were able to slowly build up layers of video that have a distinct handmade feel.
