Born in Bonn in 1978, Wessel divides his time between Germany and New York. A youthful interest in street art developed into something more serious for him after a transformative experience. In 1997, Wessel encountered the legendary artist Sigmar Polke at his exhibition “Die Drei Lügen der Malerei” (“The Three Lies of Painting”) at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle in Bonn. Inspired by Polke’s paintings, Wessel began studying fine art and art history. A study-related stay in Hamburg and Paris brings him closer to fashion- and art photography which gradually initiates his career as an artist.

2005 Wessel is relocating to New York. This contradictory city offers him, more than any other place he lived in, the option to permanently push the limits of his experience. Since his arrival, Wessel is focusing to develop his visual language and its symbolic characteristics. Through his images he continuously is searching for a new perspective on things, to show how perception, interpretation and the evaluation of the world, through another, new perspective, can transform and lead to change. With the progression of his creative vision and his demand to make a change in society Wessel is intensively focusing to extend the publication of his images besides print media to other forms in public.

Amongst others his works have been published in Art. Das Kunstmagazin (G+J), W Magazine (Condenast), Italian Vogue (Condenast), iLove Magazine (Legen Media China), Kelvin. Colour Today (Die Gestalten Verlag Berlin), Output07 (Hermann Schmidt Verlag Mainz), Germany’s Best Photographers 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 (NBDV Verlag Hamburg), Digital Photo Pro (Werner Publishing), The New York Times Newspaper, Columbia University New York… He has worked with Omahyra Mota, Lydia Hearst, Amanda Lepore, Camilla Alves, Myf Sheperd, Iekeliene Stange, MNDR, Betsey Johnson, Naeem Khan, Cynthia Rowley, J. Walther Thompson, Stefan Sagmeister from Sagmeister & Walsh and Paola Antonelli, senior curator at the Museum of Modern Art New York. Read Less
