Designing and creating works located in the South East of England (click on the Facebook logo for projects in the making and experiments) which combine different metals, such as brass, aluminium and steel. Other materials such as marble, slate, wood and perspex. The challenge of blending materials coherently and the pushing of aesthetic boundaries is fascinating to me. I fuse symmetrical forms with textures then introduce these designs to the interior and exterior environments. Once introduced to its environment the function becomes apparent whether furniture or lighting installation. I create work from simple vessels or containers to table lamps, furniture, lighting installations and public sculpture. Using techniques contrasting the blacksmiths forge to the precise machined quality of a lathe. The juxtaposition between the perfect machine aesthetic of lathed parts and the imperfect but equally beautiful hammer blows of the forged parts gives Hickey’s work a unique appearance as well as compelling to the touch. My perspective in the finish of an object is the last and one of the most important aspects in an object. The connection between the finish of every material used in the object is essential to my sense of aesthetics in an object, such as anodised aluminium and powder coated steel. Colours and forms are complementing each other, textures are in contrast. Read Less
