Zlatev is an installation artist and industrial designer utilizing open-source electronics, industrial scrap and surplus technology to create functional light sculptures and robotic art installations. Originally from Rousse, Bulgaria, he currently lives and works in San Francisco, California. He studied industrial design at the California College of the Arts.

My work is the outcome of an inspired idea propelled forward by an innate need for its realization. It is a journey of extensive experimentation with available materials and technologies, consideration of their properties and limitations, and subsequent attempts to push those limits in rationally creative ways.

At the conceptual level, of foremost importance to me is an idea rooted in a sound intellectual premise or one with a social, political, cultural or historical significance. This lends impetus to my process and depth to the overall aesthetic of the finished work.

The interconnected web of accumulated knowledge, skills, interests and experiential information that I have amassed over the course of my life, strongly inform my work, consciously and subconsciously. Some of my most inspired work comes from exposure to novel skills and experiences, insightful conversations, intriguing places, and unique customs. In my view, an artist’s individual quintessence is the product of generations of refined cultural and social aesthetics. This inner aesthetic universe is my ultimate creative guide. Read Less
