I'm not sure if the demo version of FontLab will let you save font files, doesn't your college have a full version?

Okay we have all been here... Senior in college, dirt poor and trying to get started on our own. Okay so Im really wanting to get started in creating some fonts but I have no clue how to get started. I tried creating them in illustrator then pasting the characters into FontLab demo version but its not working. I dont have money to buy a $300+ program yet and so i was wondering if anyone knew how to just create it via .eps file or anything. Please let me know!!!
