Quick question for everyone - what's the best way to get vectors into photoshop after making artwork in Illustrator?

Typically I just copy and paste them into an open photoshop document as a vector smart object. The trouble is that if your artwork is made of several components - which you hope to touch up individually, copying and pasting into Photoshop limits your ability to make edits to individual components. Rather it sees them as one big smart object.

I know there is a way to export an illustrator file as a PSD, but it doesn't preserve layers within grouped objects, and the objects are no longer vector objects, just raster layers.

What I'd like to be able to do is touch up things like shading and painting on individual objects

Any thoughts or suggestions?
